At noon ET today, the United States Mint officially introduces the 2024-S Morgan and Peace Dollar Reverse Proof Set, which is expected to generate significant interest among collectors. This set pays homage to iconic U.S. coinage and features a distinctive reverse proof finish.
2024-S Reverse Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars
The 2024-S Reverse Proof Morgan Silver Dollar and the 2024-S Reverse Proof Peace Dollar are both minted from 0.859 ounces of 99.9% silver at the U.S. Mint’s San Francisco facility. These coins are part of the ongoing series of Morgan and Peace dollars, which the Mint first revived in 2021.
According to the U.S. Mint, “The Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar programs relaunched in 2021 and immediately became popular with collectors.” The Morgan Dollar represents the nation’s westward expansion and industrialization during the late 19th century, while the Peace Dollar symbolizes the United States emerging as a global power in the early 20th century.
The original Morgan silver dollar, designed by Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan, was produced from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The Peace Dollar, designed by sculptor Anthony de Francisci, was introduced in 1921 as a successor to the Morgan and was minted annually until 1935, with a brief hiatus from 1929 to 1933.
In 1921, five special uncirculated Morgan dollars were produced to commemorate the coin’s legacy, including one with a ‘CC’ mintmark from the Carson City Mint, another with an ‘O’ mintmark from the New Orleans Mint, and one without a mintmark struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Additionally, a ‘S’ mintmark Morgan was minted at the San Francisco Mint, and a ‘D’ mintmark coin was produced in Denver. That same year, the Philadelphia Mint also struck an uncirculated Peace dollar without a mintmark.
After a hiatus in 2022 due to a shortage of silver blanks, the series returned in 2023 with a variety of new issues, including uncirculated Morgan and Peace dollars from the Philadelphia Mint, proof versions from the San Francisco Mint, and a two-coin reverse proof set similar to the one being released today.
2024 Series Overview
The U.S. Mint previously released the 2024-P Uncirculated Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars in July, followed by the 2024-S Proof versions in September. Today’s launch of the reverse proof two-coin set completes the Mint’s releases for the year.
Morgan and Peace Dollar Designs
