The United States Mint is commemorating a significant milestone with the release of the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair High Relief Gold Coin, available for purchase today at noon ET. This new coin honors America’s first dollar coin, the iconic Flowing Hair silver dollar, first minted on October 15, 1794.
High-Relief Design and Specifications
Struck from 99.99% pure gold at the U.S. Mint’s West Point facility, this proof coin weighs 1.000 troy ounce and features high relief designs that enhance the intricate details of its imagery.
The Flowing Hair dollar was designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot under the direction of Mint Director David Rittenhouse. As part of the 230th-anniversary celebration, the U.S. Mint also released the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal in October. This limited-edition medal sold out within 24 hours, with strong secondary market demand, especially for the 1,794 medals featuring a “230” privy mark.
While today’s release of the gold coin does not include a privy mark, the Mint has announced plans to later auction 230 special edition coins featuring the mark.
Design Details
The obverse (heads side) of the coin, re-sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist John P. McGraw, showcases a right-facing portrait of Liberty, encircled by 15 stars, representing the states that had ratified the U.S. Constitution by 1794. The word “LIBERTY” appears, along with the year “2024.”
On the reverse (tails side), artist Eric David Custer has re-imagined the design to depict an eagle with outstretched wings, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” adorns the design, and the denomination of “$1” is incused on the coin’s edge, along with “HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.”
